It’s all about the layers

Whether you’re dressing for work, the weekend, or a night out, there are many ways to layer your clothing and make your outfit different and personal.

Layering can be a simple thing to do, add a cardigan over a cami or pair a dress with a blazer, but by taking things to the next level, a perfectly layered look can give simple outfits a touch of the unexpected, and it is a great way to reinvigorate your wardrobe, without the extra expense.

Here are my top tips to layer like a pro:

  • Start with finer, thinner layers and build out. Keep in mind the thickness of the fabrics. Wear a number of light fabrics under a chunky fabric.
  • Have fun with textures. A nice mixture of texture is essential for layering. It gives a lot of dimension to your look.
  • Mixed and matched prints. I love mixing prints in different scales, like a large print with something small. Keep in mind when mixing prints and patterns to keep it consistent. For instance using like colors and tones, will make your look feel intentional and pulled together.
  • Experiment. Always try on your ideas. My number one cardinal rule for apparel is to always try it on. It can look so different on and off the hanger.

It’s important to understand that not every look you put together will work. It takes time and practice to master the art of layering. I continuously play around with different layered looks until I find something that works. With layering, there’s really no end to the number of combinations you can create and it’s a great way to get excited about your wardrobe again.
